Basic German for Au Pairs

Most au pairs attend language courses at least once a week while they are in Germany as it is a way to improve their German and make new friends at the same time. Families must make time to allow au pairs to attend these language courses.

  • This weekly course is aimed at au pairs who already have a very Basic knowledge German and would now like to practise and improve it in a structured yet friendly setting.
  • Set in a villa in Bad Homburg, ILSF offer a wonderful platform to learn German in a fun, friendly and practical way while getting to know other au pairs joining you on your journey to speaking German. Tuition is given primarily through German although English may be used while discussing cross-cultural topics.

What can I expect?

This course will focus on practical German for everyday living. The main focus in not on complex grammatical theory or syntax, but rather on practical phrases, vocabulary and useful structures so you can make yourself heard in the typical day-to-day situations encountered by au pairs.

Topics

In the course we will target areas such as

  • Meeting and greeting – Guten Tag und Auf Wiedersehen
  • Playing with children, looking after small babies (typical vocabulary)
  • Talking to parents
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • Doing housework, vocabulary around the house
  • Out and about – shopping, at the bank, at the doctor’s, at school, at kindergarten
  • Talking about food and drink
  • Au pair networking – small talk phrases to help you interact
  • Cross-cultural communication – idiosyncrasies of German culture through English (including book recommendation)

Method

This course is very hands on and focuses primarily on getting you to speak German using set phrases for a variety of situations. Through a series of role-plays, you practise the language that has been learnt in simulated scenarios with Trainer feedback.

Naturally basic grammar will be taught and practised, new vocabulary will be introduced and you will be requested to review what has been covered in class so we can progress the following week.
